The Dark Side
That's where I'm heading with this one.

This was shot in the Washington Cascades holding down the shutter with a stick until the battery wore out (9743 seconds). No crop, lots of sensor/lens dust cleaned up, sharpened and color balanced to make it more blue.

DNMC because I took this a couple years ago. I was very excited last Tuesday when I saw the Night Sky challenge because I wanted to do this shot again, but better. (Over 2 hour exposure and I forgot to shoot in RAW. Aarrgh!) Unfortunately, there wasn't a single evening this week with clear skies. Not one!

So, fully knowing that this entry is invalid, I step bravely into the Dark Side, wasting your time and bandwidth. Bring on the banishment. Bring on the penalties. Bring it!

P.S. Thank you DPChallenge for the last few months. I have really enjoyed getting back into regular shooting because of you. Depending on how I feel next Tuesday night, I might fork over the cash and become a full-blown member.
Disqualification Details
Your submission must be taken after the challenge is announced and before the deadline, based on the Current Server Time (US Eastern Standard Time) displayed at the bottom of every page on this site. If the date recorded in your original image file is not within the specified challenge dates, your entry will be disqualified -- NO exceptions!

Thanks! I totally agree.

Sorry to hear your shot was before the challenge dates. Its really an amazing shot. :)
I saw you were wondering about the purple on the edge of your image. This is caused from the sensor heating up from being on for so long, it creates little hot spots. It happens with really long exposures. Hope this helps.

Thanks for all of your kind comments, I only wish they were for a legitimate entry! Basically, I was pissed at the weather that I couldn't do this challenge and decided to show off what I could have done. I hope you can understand my frustration and try to forgive me.

Zoomdak: 9743 second exposure! 2 1/2 hours or so?
Kali: Nope, Canon 10D on Sigma 12-24. Thanks for the award, I feel honored, unfortunately, you should give it to someone else. Sorry.
Metatate: Wow! A 10! Plus an Envy! I'm humbled but again, you should give it to someone who didn't cheat. :(
Blackbox: no smoothing done, just some color shifts and lots of dust removal
AP: Hey! I know you! Do you remember me?

The composition of this shot catches my attention. Extra point!
06/10/2008 04:45:16 PM
Nice motion and I like the patch of purple in the upper right (city lights?). A seven for you.
06/10/2008 12:00:34 PM
I'm going to guess this was a 45 minute exposure. I like the trees on the left. I think this may have been a better composition though if you'd cropped of the tree on the right and flipped it vertical.

I'm curious if you're shooting with a Nikon and the 10.5mm... the reason being; those faint purple spots on the right border are reminiscent of what happens to me during night sky exposures longer than 7 minutes.
Easily the best star trail pic of the challenge.

Certainly an amazing anomoly of light here. Worthy of my envy and a 10.

"Man lives in a sunlit world of what he believes to be reality. But, there is, unseen by most, an underworld, a place that is just as real, but not as brightly lit... a Dark Side!"

Beautiful elliptical star trails. I like the color on the right edge, but not the tree so much.

Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

Great star trails, how long was the exposure? Nice shot.
06/08/2008 10:29:06 AM
That is awesome! Nice job!
06/06/2008 07:31:45 PM
Great effect, love this
06/06/2008 07:19:14 PM
Awesome shot, great back ground color and trees make a good sense of proportion.
06/05/2008 10:07:32 PM
Fantastic image. The trees really help frame and add depth to the image.

The star trails have some strange patterns in them. I'm guessing there were clouds moving in near the end of your exposure? I'm thinking it might have helped to take a dark frame, that way you could have subtracted the camera's 'heat' noise on the right side.
06/05/2008 04:45:12 PM
Beautiful job.
06/05/2008 03:13:11 PM
the best star trails yet!
06/05/2008 12:51:33 PM
wow thats beautiful, you've accomplished a unique and creative photograph with a method that is otherwise generic, 9
06/05/2008 09:34:55 AM
This is one of the better time lapse in the bunch.
06/05/2008 06:36:53 AM
woo! that is fast moving sky! :)
06/05/2008 05:02:13 AM
congratulations
06/04/2008 10:12:09 PM
Great. Noise in the right half is distracting.
06/04/2008 04:30:46 PM
The blue is nice.
06/04/2008 02:29:05 PM
I looks like you've smoothed the heck out of it. I'd think I'd rather have seen a more natural looking photo but I still like yours. It reminds me of a record album. Nice work: 9
06/04/2008 01:59:15 PM
this is cool
06/04/2008 12:54:43 PM
Was wondering if somebody would do the time laps. Fantastic!
06/04/2008 12:26:51 PM
Very good, I like it very much.
06/04/2008 06:47:47 AM
Would have liked to see this portrait. But it still is great.
06/04/2008 05:30:41 AM
Another one that brings back memories of my high school science book. This one is excellent, in that you've managed to capture the earth's rotational axis in the image. Colours are beautiful and the trees provide a good grounding/perspective for the image.
06/04/2008 04:28:07 AM
Wonderful
Not much else to say
just wonderful

Brilliant. A clasic star trails shot, very well executed. Good sharpness, stillness of the trees, and superb frameing.
06/04/2008 03:39:48 AM
Nice.
06/04/2008 01:27:30 AM
simply amazing, makes me feel in motion. I like the imposing trees gives it a very strong feel. The swirl of the star trails makes me feel like I am being sucked in. Fab!
