Plant seen at the local conservatory. First glance through the files I didn't really think I had anything, but then I cropped in closer on this one and really liked the effect. I hope you do too.

There are no special effect here. This plant appears almost painted just as it is. Editing includes rotate, crop, contrast/levels, cloning out a few imperfections and darkening some background greens. Resize, sharpen, border.

Greetings from the critique club!

Looking at your exposure settings I see you were at ISO 800. You could have shot this at f/8 and 1/100 of a second to get the ISO down to about 200 which would have had less noise.

The plant is an interesting find and worth exploring. It looks like the lighting was a bit harsh however so coming up with a way to light this more evenly may have helped.

As mentioned in the comments this does look like you've applied selective desaturation. Based on your editing steps thats not the case however it does appear that way. Perhaps increasing the saturation for the greens may have helped.

Overall? Not a bad shot just not a great shot. Floral shots are a really tough sell as they show up quite often especially at this time of year. (Not saying that you shouldn't shoot them they just need even more care to make them have thw wow factor)

(from the forum) Agree with Jac, another element is the lack of quality due to the crop factor: your edit's composition is much better, but this edit is about 1/4 of the original's surface: it's as if you captured it with a 2,5 Mp camera !

The first commenter touched upon the reason it didn't score higher. People thought it was a failed attempt at selective desat and scored it appropriately. That's the first thing that hit me as well. Of course I know it wasn't desaturated but that's the look this image has, unfortunately. The shadow at bottom left didn't help either.

not sure here...I like the pink, but I am not sure is the selective desat works...it lacks the wow factor
