Inspired by the 2008 Democratic presidential race. I started playing around with editing and this popped out. Made me think that the fact it's so easy to turn a white person black or vice versa by editing a photo is a sure reflection that we're all human and skin color shouldn't matter.

This isn't particularly tricky. I printed one shot of myself, cut it into puzzle shapes, and held part of it up. That's the upper left 1/4 of the image. The other 3/4 is me again behind the puzzle pieces. Both images were taken the same evening.

Then in editing, I desaturated using a gradient map, bumped up the contrast, and added a selective color adjustment layer that made the blacks white. So the 3/4 that's the "live" me in the image isn't quite a negative. Rather, the neutrals (my face) are darkened quite a bit and the blacks (my beard, hair, and the background) are flipped to white.

I like this. I like the roughness, almost as though there were some real surgery involved. It reflects the mental violence of politics and race.

Hmmm. The idea is great. But I find that I like the real Jeffrey better than the puzzled one.

Okay. The idea is brilliant (but where's Hilary?), the white and black portions are convincing (your white self and a black Hemingway), but it is a little rough/arty (which I am in favour of generally) and sort of conflicts with the inspiration. (For me. It is possible I am missing something).
