The Image: I love doing food photography and wanted to shoot a well planned image. I haven't had a great deal of success with food on dpc, or...let me put it this way, my expectations were way above my results :(

I cooked all you see here, plated up and tried to present it in an delicious way. I wanted a rustic look which I think I achieved with the metal pan and the messy presentation. I wish the steam that was coming off the fish when I plated it up was there as it really added.

I used window light from the side, hand held the camera and tried to get nice depth of field. I used an f1.4 lens but shot at f2.2 to get more of the fish in focus.

The Edit: Levels, colour balance, USM, Noise Ninja that's about it.

Prediction: Some will say it's messy, but I wanted that rustic look. Some will say something about the crop and composition...oh, well! Some will say it looks delicious and hopefully give me a good score :) Gonna hope for a 6.8PLUS...

Might do OK due to a gazillion people entering The SEPIA Challenge

THE RECIPE:

Ingredients:
1 Piece of Fresh Tasmanian Salmon
Fresh Lemon sliced
Butter Beans and Green Beans
Extra Virgin Olive Oil
Fresh Thyme from the garden
Sea Salt
Freshly Cracked Black Pepper
Red Hot Chilli

Cooking:

Rub a few drops of Extra Virgin Olive Oil and some sea salt onto the salmon. Heat up the oven (190 degrees) and place the salmon and lemon slices in the oven. (Alternatively you can cook this on the BBQ or fry it in a non-stick pan).

Turn the salmon as it is cooking to make sure each side is nicely sealed. Season to taste. I added the salt and pepper after I plated up for the sake of presentation.

While that's all happening, cook the beans in boiling water, then when they are tender, drain them and put them in cold water to stop the cooking process. Then dress them with some extra virgin olive oil, some fresh thyme, and some balsamic vinegar. Season to taste. You can even use oregano and garlic as this goes really well with the beans.

Plate it up like you see in the image. I used fresh chilli to add some heat! The Lemon Jus??? ...I was just being fancy and french there :)

You know, after all that, I didn't eat it...gave it to Millie our dog as I messed around with it so much and didn't really cook it through to my liking. She scoffed it up like it was her last meal...in fact, that's how she eats every meal. She must think I am never going to feed her again.

Hope you like the recipe and more importantly the image!

Enzo

POST: well, I guess this was well below my expectation. It was over 7 for the first day, then just slumped to 6.9's and then all of a sudden, perhaps thanks to 1's and 2's and 3's, it dropped to 6.6's at the end of the week...oh well, my dog enjoyed the food

Man, this is the most underrated shot ever, thought it would get at least a high 7ish score. What's bothering me most is that you lost against all those cliché shots

Yum! Wish you could cook dinner for me. Pleasingly arranged. Maybe one or two too many background elements. (An extraneous glass, and probably just the fork would have sufficed for cutlery)

Very nice. Might be one (or two) many items on the table that keep diverting the eye from the main subject.

Well for goodness sake. I think this is the most wonderful looking bit of food I've ever seen. You did a fantastic job!! This should totally go in a health food magazine for sure. I love the lighting and the colors, and the composition is just great. Yay!

excellent saturated colors with very good contrast. you should have tamed some highlights a little though. also that over-exposed white candle(?) in top right takes away the warmth/delicacy from the image. without that overall a very good shot. good luck.

OK- I honestly would not eat that if it was put infront of me :) but I don't try new things and that's oK it works for me *LOL* (and I don't like fish but I don't score down for what I like or dislike) ;) the composition is lovely, the play of circles is great! :) I like how you have the composition in a pan which looks like a plate at first glance! :) I enjoy the off-set of the image and slight slant you created...there are some wonderful shapes and creative things going on- and I can see this easily being part of a magazine shot with a recipe; so...drumm roll pleaseee..... (10) :) *see some of us can look past our personal dislikes or aversions ;) :-D goodluck!! :)

The food looks very appetizing. I like what you did with the color of the background and the napkins. The only part I'm not sure about is the white candle? at the top.

Aah, someone knows good food and good food photography. Someone from Melbourne possibly.
Very delicious, well arranged and cropped. only thing I'd change would be a reflector above the left half to get a bit more light into the pan an have nicer reflections in the cutlery (and clean the knife from fingerprints, of course).

best one so far, good luck

10 for you but - those are not butter beans, they are wax and green beans. At least I've always seen butter beans to be a large yellow lima bean. Anyway, image is a ten!
