POMT day 3.

Italy is a country that finds itself divided between the old and the new. It is overflowing with ancient architecture, monuments and statues, and there are deep seeded traditions and a very established way of life. There is, however, also a constant desire for newer and better things. In a country that has the lowest average income in Europe people still find the resources to sport the latest in designer fashion, have the very latest mobile phones and worship MTV.

That is a McDonald's arch sticking out behind his head.

Interesting comments to go with your picture. I like the B&W and how you've captured the thoughts in the comments. Lining up your model with the arch works perfectly here.

I would never have seen the McDonalds sign (and still don't). I figured you were referring to his attire and attitude as New as opposed to the old world statuary he was resting on. Either way, it works well. Like the b&w conversion for this.

I like how the guys is facing one way while the statue is facing the other way. People of my town would make a great photo book.

Your caption is right on. The The young man's style definitely reflects the new and the architecture reflects the old.

I like the strength of this black and white composition, especially the way the person os sitting in the space of the open arch behind him

The best part about photography is not about changing the world by capturing an image, but how capturing an image changes how you view the world yourself. Your insight serves you well and reading about what you feel regarding your images is a true treat. :)

Wonderfully framed! Excellent light on his face, too. As others have noted, the stories that go with your shots are very informative - enjoying the ride with you on this challenge!

Jimi! I am loving your style and the story you are telling about where you live with your photography. I've never been to Italy, but have been so drawn to it and inspired by photos I've seen and television documentaries. Thank you for sharing. Each day is a cool new treat. I'm so glad you picked the subject you did for this challenge!

Oh, and I have to disagree with Socal about the McDonalds arch being a distraction. I don't think it looks like its coming out of his head. I think it looks like it is nicely framing him to add interest and composition. Art and photography is so subjective, isn't it? My vote: This has personality and character totally as is!

Jutilda-> Yes it's ridiculous.

socalsteve-> I agree, it was a candid shot, I spotted the guy, waved my camera at him and snapped, unfortunately he moved back slightly in his eagerness to pose! C'est la vie.

Interesting pic given the write-up. The McDonalds arch is great symbolically but detracts from the shot as it looks like it is coming out of his head. Maybe moving more to the left would let it stand on its own? I like the B&W conversion. What's your theme this month?

Isn't it funny how guys feel compelled to do the peace sign??? Nice light and focus.
