 Went down the firetrail with roz this morning to get an image for this challenge. Normally there is a fair bit of activity, insect wise, about 10am when the sun gets a bit of warmth in it. However, it was cool this morning with a sw wind blowing and there was very little going on. I also had my Tamron 18-200 on and just couldn't get close enough for any decent quality or focus.
I decided to make another trip this afternoon because the day had warmed up considerably, and instead of taking the Tamron took my Canon 100-400. I initially thought that I wouldn't be able to get the focus right on such a small subject, and especially when this lens doesn't focus within 1.9m (6') but in saying that, the optics of this lens are just amazing. I found this fella, cruising around catching flies about 100m from home. Every now and then he would stop for a breather. It's quite strange that dragonflies return to the same spot several times before changing hunting areas.

Like the composition here... and he looks like he's just barely hanging on! The greens give a nice blip of contrast to the warm browns too.

Great detail on the legs of the fly and the stem he is perched on. Is this rotated at all?
