Great details and rich tones. Slightly wider dof might have worked a bit better as his skin tones are so close to the background that his shoulders tend to melt away into the bokeh in a somewhat unsettling fashion. |

I love everything about his portrait...especially the great details in his face. The natural light really suits the subject well and just the right amount of sharpness.. |

this is really good, it gives a sense of how nice he is but the natural light gives it an honest feel that he has done some living in his time. |

Nice, nice DOF, I wonder if you bumped the contrast/brightness up a little what would happen? Great, shot I'd be proud to have it in my portfolio. |

Wonderful portrait. But since you asked for critical comments. I'm missing 'catchlights' in his eyes.
I may have also been tempted to slightly dodge his around his right eye - particularly under the brow.
But honestly I could care less - it's just WONDERFUL! |

I flipped between this version and your FS, and while the FS has very little color in it, it does seem to have a bit more depth and warmth to it. The basic elements - the comp, the subject's smile - those all work in both shots. Maybe try a duotone - actually a tritone - with warm grays to see if you get some of that depth back. Or just leave it the way it was for the free study. That worked just fine in my opinion. |

i wonder if this b/w would have scored higher in the free study than the colour version?
either way, you were robbed only getting a six.
this really is a great portrait. |

I think this is one of the better portraits I've seen in a long time. This is just a perfect photo for black and white, and I like your conversion a lot. Just a thought, but it seems like portraits are for the young and beautiful, or for those people with a lot of "character." |

Great texture and detail for a portrait, a great subject for sure. I do find the b&w version a bit darker and would like to see his face a bit lighter and maybe burn the bright spot down a tid bit. I think the focus and DOF are spot on though and a nicely done portrait, well done. |

Oh man! Antonio has a WONDERFUL face to photograph. So much character. So handsome with all his deep eyes kind smile. The lines and chiseled features enhance his look even more. The only thing I would have done differently is try to get more light on his face, maybe with a levels or curves layer on just the face so the background is over lightened?
I think its an awesome portrait. My favorite kind to try to shoot.

What an interesting face, and gleam in his eye, and you have captured it perfectly. The FS version is wonderful and IMHO it should have scored better. The DOF is great with me as it helps keep my eyes on the face. I find the BG a little more distracting in this B&W version. Maybe if Antonio's face was lightened just a smidge. |

I'm surprised it didn't score higher in the FS. It's a very pleasing portrait. Hope you gave him a copy. |

It's a nice portrait. Focus on the face is spot on. I would like to see just a little more depth of field. Enough to at least bring the ears into focus and perhaps even the shoulders. |

nice, i like how simple it is. its a little hard to tell what it is, but i dont think that takes away from the experience. |
