Challenge: Magazine Cover Revisited (Advanced Editing I)
Camera: Nikon Coolpix 5000
Location: Richmond, California
Date: Mar 19, 2004
Galleries: Nature, Digital Art
Date Uploaded: Mar 21, 2004

Took this picture in natural light, deep shadow under some tea trees, and then used a water color filter in photoshop but backed out about half of the effect to get a clearer image. Also altered the contrast slightly. Cropped and resized for this challenge.

That would certainly work- good color & layout. Who do your think would be more offended- the Digest for submitting a photo for a watercolor magazine or DPC voters for submitting a watercolor on a photo site? It's an image to be proud of, but no longer a photo in my opinion.

I doubt Watercolor Digest would put a photo on the cover, but this is certainly beautifully done. I enjoy the image, but wish there was more detail in the bird and less in the background.

Photographic intergrity?

This is an interesting use of a PS filter, but I can't really imagine a watercolor painting of a bird that deliberately left in a fence in the background, or at least not one that made the cover of a magazine. This photo may have stood alone as a regular photo for a bird magazine perhaps, with a careful cloning out of the fence. The setting is good.

Great shot, I can see this working really well. just for fun - Would true watercolour fans mind that it was a photopshop filter job and not a genuine watercolour i wonder?

The bird blends a little too much with the background. It'd be nice to have the bird clear and the rest of the photo with this filter effect.

Darn. You have presented me with a conundrum here. On one hand, I really don't like the use of digital filters. On the other hand, the use of such a filter REALLY makes the subject of the magazine. I think I will have to make an exception here.

Nicely done and very appropriate use of filter. Nice colors and composition. Hope you don't get beat up for daring to be different.

I understand the intention with the use of this effect, - but still I think you chose the wrong shot...
