Very intriguing. Something about it just eludes us, and that is its strength. |

Its as if the ocean has frozen over. |

I pondered this for a while as it does seem to be missing something. I think it must be the nondescript sky over the field of light and shadow. Of course it has to end somewhere. I too mistook this for an ocean shot.

The lighting is nice, but the photo seems to be missing something. |

I often want to stop as I am driving long hours to take pictures of the shiny snow where I love. I love the different textures it has when the sun hits it just right. |

Very nice! The glare and the tone really do add to the illusion that this is an ocean shot. |

My reference to my conversion steps is really only a rough outline. Although I like to convert to b&w in Lightroom sometimes, once the picture is transfered to photoshop I have difficulty adjusting tonality and am left with little more than contrast to work with - for this picture I delayed conversion for more control of saturation tonality in layers especially in relation to gradient map. There are really many subtle, intuitive ways to work with b&w. I wanted to mention primary steps, as I found them effective for this picture. |

Like everyone else, I mistook this for a wide angle shot of the ocean. Very interesting. One question for you: Why did you move out of Lightroom into Photoshop to do your black and white conversion? I think they are identical, aren't they? |

Add me to the list who thought it was water from the thumbnail. Nice study of light and texture. |

I thought the same thing Andi did. That it was an ocean. But it had such a different look to it, which drew me in and made me want to study it. I love it. I love the simplicity of it and the negative space of the textured hillside. Very much a thumbs up for this one :)

André, the cool thing about this shot is that is appears not to be what it is. From the thumb I too thought of seaside and before looking at your comment was thinking rippled sand at the beach. |

An excellent illusion! One would naturally assume this was the ocean. Though indeed it is, just displaced and frozen. |

Cool texture that keeps the viewer guessing. My first thought was lake...then sand...then ice. |

Texturally cool. I'd like to see some more dramatic highlights here but the choice you made is also fine. Cheers. |

great abstract - hard to know what I am looking at without your comments.
Alot of detail and patterns for the the eye to follow. |

Yeah - it confused me too. But the horizon is too curved to be a shot of the sea. Nice textures & tones. |

How strange this is: without your description I would have thought it was a calm sea. |
