I love the southwest Michigan lighthouses and have taken hundreds of the St. Joe light myself. I've always wanted to get a classic ice-covered lighthouse image, but now that I live in Florida, that simply isn't going to happen. I've learned that you pretty much have to be there on the day that "it" happens. While I still have a home in Berrien County, but I opt for the warmer weather during those cold, icy days on Lake Michigan. Drat!

I like the color of the light house and how it stands out from the mostly white background. The snow and sky are a little overexposed for my taste. Darkening both the sky and the snow a little would give it more contrast and really improve the photo. |

I wish there was more emphasis on the beacon. The red is on the shaded side of this and loses color punch, while the majority of the image is brighter. Some considerations...looks like you had a fantastic sky to work with. The details in those clouds could really add some punch to this photo in a big way with some processing to bring them out. I'm far from an expert on this. Someone with dodge & burn skills could really provide some feedback. I might have played with HDR to try and maximize the range.
Did you use a polarizer? That may have helped with sky as well. I notice some glare coming off the ice/snow in the lower center...a polarizer would have controlled that some as well.
All JMO of course. :-) Good luck in the challenge. |
