What I will normally do when trying out a texture I think will work. I'll reduce the opacity to about 75% then hi-light the blending mode text and scroll through all the blending modes, using the scroll wheel on the mouse, making note of the ones that might work. I'll then go back to those blending modes and fine tune the opacity until I get what I'm after or something that looks half reasonable anyway... : )
