This year I decided to actually do a "study" each month. January I did smoke. It was fun, I liked the results, but the voters really didn't. This month, I decided to do a self portrait.

My lighting setup is crap (Sears work lights, umbrellas, and a Sigma flash that I can only use on the camera unless I hand hold it). I kept getting glare on my glasses, so I had to work that out. I finally did it by firing the flash into an umbrella set pretty close to me. The results aren't great, but I did learn one thing.

I NEED BETTER LIGHT.

Okay, just like the smoke, the voters didn't like this much either (a little more than the smoke though). Maybe I'll keep doing my "studies", but still just enter my best photo of the month like I usually did before. At least I didn't get any 1's. That's a consolation.

What is that on the left? Did you have to clone something out? I am paranoid about this kind of thing myself. I clone something out and I think it looks just fine, and then people with brighter monitors can see my edits.

A really fine portrait. Good tonal distribution. Nice and sharp detail. Also like the duotone.
