 This is the first time I've tried shooting a still life like this... I've taken inspiration from other shots much like this on DPchallenge.... I don't have any great lights or anything, plus this would've been better w/ a macro lens. oh well.... I'm pretty happy with it, but can see there still remains room for improvement.

opened into photoshop, adjusted RAW
cloned out a few dust spots and specks on the pencils and background.
levels, curves, rotate 135 degrees clockwise, flatten, crop, add border, save for web.

A bit out of focus in places, but the overall concept and composition boosted you up there. Nice job and congrats on a new personal best!

My highest score yet, working on the sharpness and focus... This was the first time I attempted this... Glad some people liked it!

The focus/sharpness seems a little soft, particularly on the top white pencil.

I'm not fond of the shine on both of the black pencil tips as well as the fact that it's not sharp.

Nice work on the positive negative idea, the lighting is ok as well, only lil problem is that is a tad oof? If it was nice and sharp it would be a very strong entry! Good luck ;]
