I agree with some of the comments so far, but I don't think the boy spoils the picture at all. I don't know if you intended it but the shot reminds me of The Scream by Edvard Munch (//www.popartuk.com/art/the-scream-6410033-print.asp). The contrast of the pleasant beach and the quite happy looking boy is an entertaining contrast with the anguish and panic in Munch's painting. And so much more subtle than the Home Alone version.

Lots of lines and shadows. But it is not a untidy picture (as so many can be) and the boy looks a sunny as the day. Very nice.

would have had more impact without the person posing there

Nice parallels, but the way he is standing and where he is standing make it look like a candid shot for the family photo album. Try having him closer to the camera or farther away from the camera, use the rule of thirds. Try using a larger size as well, use the 640 limit to your advantage. I don't know how or why, but it looks fuzzy, maybe you cropped it too close or something, but try to avoid this. Having the title in all capitals makes it seem like you are yelling, at least to me, and I don't like to be yelled at. ^_^

that is a very nice looking kid. Too bad the photo isn't.

Perhaps this shot would have been more effective without any people. The parallel lines in the fence would made more of a statement without the boy.

The boy spoils this shot - he detracts from the lines, doesn't add to them. Everything else is well litm but his face is in shadow.
