My Version of Spongetoast's 'Fur'
Taken in my living room of my cat, when he was being posy and cooperative for once :)
My different textures are the whiskers, the ruffled belly fur, the shiney eyes, and the general background blur

Critique Club critique:

Composition/Content: I think a tighter crop to just above the carpet wouldve helped this place higher.Cropping like this wouldve also made those wonderful eyes fall right into the 1/3 line which is exactly what DPC looks for.
Lighting: I think you needed a bit mmore light on the cats head which wouldve lightened his beautiful eyes and maybe helped make them POP.
Background: Either a burned black BG or just hanging a sheet/blanket behind him wouldve helped as the BG is quite distracting as is. It definately competes with the cat.
Camera Work/Technical: more light wouldve helped you have a faster shutter and you wouldnt have the noise thats there because you could have lowered the ISO.
Digital Processing: burn the bg out to get rid of the bright spots and then dodge the cat to help make him be seen wouldve been a bit better
My Opinion: You went with a hard photo to begin with but I think you did do it alot better than the orginal. If you dont have a noise removal program I would suggest this one: //www.imagenomic.com/download.aspx I use this one and highly recommend it (and its free). I love the light right on the cats face but I think it needs more. the cat does have beautiful eyes and I think bringing them out and making them the center piece of this image rather than the whole cat wouldve been better (just personal taste tho).
If you have any questions about anything I have said please contact me. ( I would love to borrow your edited version so I can show you what I mean by "bringing out the cats eyes" then explain to you what I did)

I just realized that the cats in both of your submissions is the same singular cat. It's amazing how different (s)he looks depending on what is going on.

I mentioned before the background issue. With this picture, a nice tan or brown blanket would have done the trick and added more texture. I referenced my original vote and I thought it was well done on my first sight.

Too much background. Watch your DOF. Good job catching the texural differences.

Nice take on the original. I think a less distracting background and more detail in the texture of the cat's fur would help. I like that you have the cat's face in your take - it adds more interest. Your colors match perfectly.

Spongetoast Fur) took a picture of a sleeping cat, while yours is awake. But besides that it is a nice clam portrait with good details in fur and eyes. DOF is sufficient to keep the complete head in focus - good job. THe only part I find improvable is the control of the background (the bright spot, and the bright band between the ears), 7

just another cat shot, has little similarities with the original. background is too cluttered, crop is unlucky, to much noise
