The texture is made from one image flipped four ways and merged with varying degrees of opacity using multiply. Percentages ranged between 25 and 75%.

Then, an image of an elephant (converted to some form of sepia) was merged with this mess using multiply. Opacity was adjusted.

Then another set of the complete texture was merged with harsh light.

I like that idea of combining multiple passes of the same texture flipped four ways - it works well for you here, creates almost a natural framing around the elephant and complements the grasses.
