I converted this with Virtual Photographer. Used a lot of levels and sharpening to get a high contrast going on.

A little too blurry, but nice angle and contrast on the hands.

Love the high contrast on this - not only does the henna really stand out, but I love how the stitching on her skirt(?) and the details on her bracelets catch your eye too.

I like the processing to help us focus on what you wanted us to see; I am not at all averse to being led, especially when -- as here -- we're led to something interesting.

The contrast on this is really good. It makes the designs almost pop off the subjects hands.

cool! i've always wondered how long that lasts.

I really like the high contrast approach - you did a pretty good job of maintaining some level of detail in the skin on the hands. I wonder about the skin tones up the arm - they seem to be very different from the hands

Interesting subject! This image works well with high constast. Well done!

Very interesting compostion and the tones are great. I like the fact that the hands are angled a bit from the arms because flat opened hands can look "snapshotish" otherwise. Of course what makes this really work is the great contrast.

I like the hi contrast that you went for in this shot. Hope you didn't get that on your camera:)

I always find these drawings so interesting. Nice contrast you obtained.

As a b/w I would have liked this to not have the cloth at the bottom but the contrast comes out beautifully..

Interesting...how long did that take to do. Nice contrast and tones. I think a different background to hightlight the hands or some vignetting would really make the hands pop.

Didn't know anything about this, so yet another thing I learned (Googled it a little). Very nice drawings in B&W. Probably also nice in color.

interesting effect .. i'm full of questions !!!
like wot colour is it before desaturation?
who drew the designs?
whose hands are they?
love the way the designs blend into the bangles ..
and the designs have a very similar feel to lots of design work i did with pen and ink .. very hippy feel .. :)
i think i'm seeing one of your hand made bags underneath the hands .. ?? .. which adds nicely to the overall design .. :)

good high contrast, it still has the details in the brights. it seems the tattoo bleeds of her hands inverts and runs down the cloth. :)

The extremes of contrast and the use of graphic design are what I learn from your photo. And the concept of exoticism.

How interesting, Alicia! I love the extreme range of tones from bright whites, to grays, to pure blacks. The contrast is amazing!

I was just telling my daughter about this..didn't realize the name.. why get a permanent tatoo when you can get this. Excellent contrast!

Hi Alicia - I love how a lot of your photos have this hint of new age/spiritual themes. I love looking at all the details in the designs. And then it's capped off with the artistic bracelets. Did you get any of this ink on your shutter button? lol

Just a thought for you. Something that might be fun. Put a vignette around this to darken the area around the hands. I'm just picturing a spotlight effect on the hands so that nothing else distracts from the artwork.

Fun picture!

I really like this in b/w. Very cool! I like the dark fabric with the white design on it with this.

ok, having read the photographers comments on your profile version (which I actually prefer but guess its a duotone?) I see they are your hands and yes, it can be difficult if your setting the shot up yourself. When I'm doing sp's I tend to keep the cam close enough to trip with the wired remote and take a couple of test shots and check composition etc before switching the lens to manual focussing. Photographing your hands would be a bit more ticky but you could arrange your pose with one hand using the other to focus using the wired remote then use the timer function and recompose your hands?

I do feel your pose here looks a little awkward thus not natural. Do you wear it until it wears off or do you wash it off?

Such intricate artwork. I think this would be lovely to wear, so exotic and different. You are sure to get looks from people.

Great job with the contrasts & tones. I think it's a good photograph, but I'm not wild about the pose or the henna job. The hand on the left looks very awkward to me, and the henna job looks a little messy compared to many I've seen - perhaps it's the very white of the skin that makes it appear that way.

This is some magnificent henna! (My wife introduced me to that art with a book she purchased.) Congratulations to the artist! He or she is quite adept!

You have captured it nicely!

1. Just a thought...you might be surprised by the use of macro setting (on the end of a 300mm lens, like I have!) I have done some macros on that setting, and it's the difference between fine-tuning and coarse adjustment on old B/W TV's.

2. Maybe it's just me, but I think that highlighting the forearms with Magic Wand or Polygonal Lasso, and then decreasing the brightness would improve the "draw of the eyes" to the hands. (Hope that is beneficial!)

Much success to you this year! :)

I like it. although the hands themselves took a bit to white. Perhaps this was intentional - not sure.

Lovely work with the henna, and I like the high contrast aspect alot - really shows off the artwork as well as the bracelets. Good composition as well.
