Challenge: Abandoned Buildings II (Basic Editing) Camera: Canon EOS-30D Lens: Canon EF 15mm f/2.8 Fisheye Location: Smithfields, London Date: Jan 15, 2008 Aperture: f22 ISO: 100 Shutter: 1.3 Date Uploaded: Jan 15, 2008

My intended location was a squat in Camden but the entire building has been pulled down...so I rode around looking for derelict buildings. I ended up in the City (probably the dumbest place to look given the price of land) but came across the old section of Smithfield's meat market near Liverpool Street. The four shots I took there (with HDR bracketing, but can't use for basic editing) weren't all that special but then it started tipping down with rain which put pay to any alternates.
The two things that bother me with this photo are the boring sky and the clipped kerb at the bottom. With a more interesting/clouded sky and that kerb in place it would have been a much nicer shot, but as it stands it's the best I could do with crap source photos and limited editing possibilities.
PP: convert from RAW, greyscale, duotone, sepia tone, contrast, usm, nn, resize, jpg.
I tried a number of different contrast options but in the end this, with a 5% touch of sepia, is the best I think I could do. I don't often do any toning but I think a little sepia adds to the olde world appeal, and I'm hoping that charm will carry the viewer past what I think was an average shot. Anything better than a 5.5 will be fine... although less than a 5 wouldn't be such a shocker.
Post Challenge: Better than expected and can't complain. The HDR outtake is nicer I think, but invalid for basic:

I'm usually not crazy on fisheye but it's not overdone here. 8 |

Beautifully executed with the wide angle. Love it in B&W and I hope it wins a ribbon. One of the best of the lot. |

The fisheye-ness (if that makes sense) ruins this shot for me. The contrast is good and the compsotion is otherwiase very good. |
