The spark plug hung stright down in a thin wire in front of the black background. Held a sparkler behind the plug. Light from window left and a spot light at the spark plug because of the strong back lit from the sparkler.
Canon macro lens 100mm/2.8 and tripod.
A lot of Photoshop work - rotating, cropping, levels, color balance, burning and dodging, cloning, healing brushing, and more ...
Both the whole image and smaller parts several times. Also used some of Fred Miranda's tools to get the final result.

Terrific image Carsten. This was another of my favorite shots in this challenge and I'm glad to see it ribboned. Excellent job with the lighting and exposure of the spark plug with the bright sparkler in the background!

Awesome idea, and very well done. This is one of my favorites for this challenge. Your lighting on the plug is spot on! How'd you do it?

The flame has to be a sparkler.

Great picture!

What did you use to make the sparks?

I had the idea to do something with a sparkplug as well. But they are quite boring, even when they are sparking. This is great though, good setup, well executed. I wonder how it was done (floating sparkplug with sparks in bg). The only flaw is that a sparkplug cannot spark when there is no connector on top. :)

Very, very clever concept. Given the quality of this image it is clearly one of the best in the challenge and should be in the ribbon hunt.

Super clear and sharp (DSLR?), very nice composition, colors are spot on. Great job! Should do very well. - My initial thoughts were that you carefully placed a sparkler behind the plug, but I believe it would have produced to much smoke. What puzzles me is that the sparks are flying outward in a circular pattern, not sure how I would have accomplished that.... (maybe an extended exposure would have allowed enough time to produce it?). I will have to check back after the challenge. Again..... great job!

Your spark plug idea came out so much better than mine. very nice. where i spent so much time trying to capture a real spark, you mimicked one with fantastic results. 10

Other than nicely done, my only comment is that the spark is not centered in the gap. But considering it is a hot plug. . . you still got a CHAMPION!

It's clever and I like the use of the sparkler - which you've captured beautifully - but the sparkplug itself just isn't a subject that holds a lot of visual interest for me.

I think this could be a winner, focus is great ... well done

To be convincing as a trick shot i think you need the sparks to be originating at the point of the electrodes - and also here they're very obviously all behind the plug, rather than emanating from it. The amount of light on the plug itself is too much also - emphasises the searation between the sparks and the plug, rather than bringing it together in a convincing image.
