 Huon Pine is a rare wood from Tasmania. It's usually harvested from the bottom of rivers where its lain for 100's of years

Beautiful texture to the wook and the colour are very vibrant. I like how you lit this shot, providing just enough shadow to highlight the grain but not mask out the crevaces.

You can still buy the wood - it's pretty expensive though. This particular piece was given to me as a birthday present(!). We have a wood expo show every year, and you can usually pick up a few nice pieces each year. I've heard that there are Huon pine trees over 1000 years old still standing down in Tasmania - and I hope they last 'till they're 2000 years old.

I grew up around lumber, gotta love that smell.
the grain of the wood is interesting how it wraps around the knot.
