 Well other than taking it in colour and desaturating it in PS just resized and sharpened. the flash was off camera to the left and around 4m in front. Love the wireless set up :) it was angled up to create less shadows

On another note I know that a number of voters will see this as a DNMC due to being a set up shot, but most of the news papers are full of this style, so I guess we will see.

My prediction... 6.1

Really good subject matter for Australians. So typical the dry soil through the hands and a good look on the mans face to marry with the title.

technically this is an amazing shot...i am just not sure how many photo journalists edit or have their composition so well lit...either way ill rate it like its for the sunday magazine of the times vs the times...=-) well done

Interesting shot, nicely lit to show detail. IMO the tree behind his right arm detracts a little from the sand details.

This is a nice human interest photo. I like capture on the falling dirt, The expression on his face tells the story for us. With this shot B&W works very well, your subject appears to jump out at you. Overall this shot is well consived and set up. It is hard to get good lighting in a challenge with such limited editing rules, but that is not a problem here, you were patient and waited by the look of things. I doubt that I'll see another approach that is similar to this one.
