 The setup:
1. drive and hour and a half to Banff and buy one of every flavor/colour of rock candy, from a very cranky store cleric which makes me never want to return to that store again.
2.take everything into the dark basement
3.stick rock candy in to a chunk of Styrofoam - unfortunately white in colour
4.set up a black sheet for backdrop and place rock candy about 3' from the sheet on a small table
5. put a black T-shirt over foam block to hide it from the camera
6. set camera manual mode for a 2 second exposure
7. trigger shutter with remote
8. use 430ex flash and manually hit the candy from behind with 2 bursts on the darker colour side and 1 on the lighter coloured candy side

Edit in ACR for colours, sharpen in PS CS3, save for web, upload and hope for the best.

there were actually 58 pics taken as I was trying to light them up with a high powered flash light then after an hour of messing with that I tried the 430ex by just ducking down low in behind the scene and manually triggering the flash which seemed to work after several tries.

Ill prob get hammered for the sticks on the bottom but I did send in a question to the SC two days ago about if is was legal or not to clone out the sticks so Im going on the side of caution and keeping them in...

HI!

I love rainbows and spectrums and have thousands of images; yours is gorgeous and I love that it's real candy. The texture is Very eye-catching, and you show that within the trad ROYGBIV are infinite other colors.

Critique Club Comment:

When voting on this image, I thought that it was quite nice but did not live up to its full potential.

Nice:
Colors here are very lovely, and they're arranged with obvious care. The background is very, very nice as it 1) fails to distract and 2) offsets the candy colors nicely. Reading your comments is interesting because it's neat to hear what you had to do to get the background like that.

Not lived up to potential:
I really felt that if you had used less colors it would have been a stronger image. Red orange yellow green light blue dark blue purple. That way it would have said "rainbow" in a stronger fashion to me. Fewer candies would also have let you get closer so we could better see the nice texture.

Nice glow from the lighting. Does not seem as detailed as I am trying to see in it. It's probably just the scaling down to 640 pixels lost a lot.

I wonder how it would look like, if you cropped it in such a way, tht the viewer will see only the rainbow made of crystals :) I like the lighting and colours. Excellent idea.

really nice set up and good illumination of the rock candy - the color choices from white to 'black' really works bu the burned in/ shadows section at the bottom of the image distracts me a bit
