Challenge: What is this Pencil? (Basic Editing)
Camera: Sony DSLR-A100
Lens: Sony DT 18-70mm f/3.5-5.6 Aspherical ED Zoom Lens for Sony Alpha
Location: Whittlesey brick works
Date: Oct 13, 2007
Aperture: F/29
ISO: 100
Shutter: 1/3 secs
Date Uploaded: Oct 16, 2007

Well, I like this, even if the voters don't, lol..

Hopefully, ppl will realise there's another chimney behind the pencil but you never know.

This is a tricky one to pull off as you make a decision to focus either on the pencil itself (as I did here) or on the background, and the other won't be in focus at all. I've countered it a bit here by going for aperture priority mode and the smallest aperture I could with the lens (F29? didn't even know it went up to that lol) at the expense of a slow shutter speed. In this shot I've got a slight movement of the pencil, as it's handheld (obviously) which is evident from the slight halo-ing around the rubber and the writing on the pencil. This shot is the best of the bunch though.

I tried a few shots with the sharp end upward but figured it more resembled a chimney this way plus it was too hard to not have the chimney poking out from behind. I know *someone* will criticize me either way lol.

Editing: slight straightening, curves, noise removal, usm, cropped out two dust spots.

POST: woohoo new PB!!! Thanks for all the comments :-)

30th place is not bad, think the voters did like it! I like it as well. Clever idea and a very steady hand!

Very nice perspective. I like the full focus on the foreground right through to the background. Keep up the creative thinking.

I agree, this was one of the better pictures in the challenge, at least it was original and consistent with the challenge. I think you made the right decision on how to focus it, my only criticism is what appears to be a bit of sensor dust.

Nice job,

Jack

Hand doesn't fit photo and distracts from looking at the pencil when reading the title of the photo.

Nice use of perspective. Too bad for all the ugly background stuff...

Creative, but I think it would work better without the hand.

Nice idea. Excellent DOF, especially for items so close and so far away.

ya gotta love it. great concept, execution, title. don't like the scruffy trees - what can you do. good DOF. 8.

For me, without your title it might be hard to understand what your intent was. I do like the triangular composition of the three vertical elements though. Good lighting and the perspective is fun.

hah! great compsoition.. I don't like the exposure though.. perhaps too dark and too red..

Fun idea! The whole setup is too cluttered for me, though. A different perspective focussing on just two chimneys, a real one and a pencil one, might be more interesting. But I know how difficult it is to position yourself in such a way that no distracting stuff is in your picture, there's just too much of it around! ;-)

I think a crop without the hand in the shot would've been more successful? Interesting

The pencil is shaky and not sharp. Artifacts could be seen on the pencil too.

Kinda sad, but very interesting scenery when you get to looking at your image though. I wish this were lighter, but I give you credit for being so creative! This is still a funny image!!

Great idea, it think it would have been a bit better if you composed the image without your hand in it though

Might be better cropped without the hand? Fun though. ;o)

This would be a much better shot if the the hand wasn't in the picture. None of the other smoke stacks have hands holding them. Also it would be better if it was over exposed a little bit, it is too dark for me.
