 I saw this fire hydrant comming home from a Wake Forest basketball game near the stadium. I was planning on taking some pics of it anyway, and then this challenge came. So it seemed like a perfect fit.

I used ISO 400 for this shot plus some pretty heavy cropping, which created some grain in the background. I would have liked to either use dust & scratches or Neat Image to clean up the background. However, it took away from the texture of the hydrant with out being able to spot edit.

thanks for all the comments. it's my new highest scoring pic, beating out two previous ribbons i have too.

it's cool to see that i didn't get hammered too bad for the wild composition.

I like the contrast between the sharpness of the weathered flakes of paint and the soft focus background that is just a blur of light and dark. Nice composition, square frame works well.

Ah, great shot. I love the colors.. And I like the particular point of view you used and how it parallels with the title. It looks as though the warrior is standing guard watching over the streets.. Helps that the top of the hydrant looks like a helmet somewhat.. congratulations on the shot. 9

My only 10 for this challenge.
Excellent spotting.
Love the colors and the choice of dof of the subject vs the relatively uniform colored and balanced background. Great composition.

Nice color and texture. My eyes would have liked to see more of the hydrant 'compositionally' though (is that a word???) Extreme closeup would have made for cool abstract image as well. Cool! :)

Nice image. Composition, colour, exposure, framing all very assured. as a minor point, in such a regular composition, i think i might have tried to get more precisely level with that collar, the slight perspective on it seems out of place, but that counts for very little against such a top shot.

Great closeup of a fire plug. fire hydrant. The layers of peeling paint really help to give a sense of texture. The darker background combine with the contrasting colors of the subject really makes the composition interesting. The frame looks a bit too big for the shot. "10" anyways.

I tend to vote higher on the photos that dare to cross into creativity and leave the safe threshold of stock images. I really like this. A tad more crop to the left might enhance the effect.
