 Photo of a water fountain which uses a small disc in the bottom of a bowl of water, when turned on, to produce a "dry ice" effect of smoke smoldering out of the bowl. Taken approximately at 6:15 pm. Later in the night it will also produce a small glow in the base of the fountain which you can see through the smoke.

Greetings from Critique Club

Hi my name is Leroy. I am here in response to your request for an indepth critique of this photo.

First Reaction (the most important one)
I'm usually pretty liberal on if things meet the challenge, and I couldn't force myself to make this one fit.

Lighting
Lighting is a bit boring and overall just flat.

Composition
For this type of shot, I suppose the composition is ok, but nothing really makes it stand out.

Focus and other Technicals
Focus seems ok, exposure is also ok. May be just a tad overexposed.

Meeting the Challenge
Not even close. Now, if it had been smoke and mirrors, I might have given it to ya :-)

How to grow its score
DPC loves pizazz and wow, but most of all they like images to meet the challenge.

Conclusion
Keep working at it. Most of all, enjoy what ya shoot and do it for you. The rest will come with time.

The harsh lighting did not help. I think a side-light, black background would have made this image really good.

I think this could have been a lot better with a better angle (not simple straight on) and more dramatic lighting (not straight on flash).

This would look really good with better lighting like a single spot or a two point setup. It looks a bit too snapshot-ish and not dramatic enough. The idea is good, I think, but it lack punch.
