 This concept hit all at once after trying several other ideas (including one that resulted in my camera landing in the snow). This was a tricky shot because I could only take two or three images at a time before the "subject" was reduced to ashes. I was forced to drop in the note, set the camera and then - shoot shoot shoot! After several attempts I finally ended up with the look I wanted - partially burned but still legible.

To do this, I found that if I placed several pieces of newspaper behind the letter, and then sprayed the back of the paper with a water bottle, it would burn slower, giving me a bit more time to set up for the shot after I dropped everything in the fire. It was also a bit of a challenge getting the note to land in the fire properly so that the text would be visible

I increased the Satiuration and Contrast significantly and reduced the Brightness just a touch. All of this was done in The Gimp v. 1.2. Resized in FinPixViewer (Software that came with my camera).
