It is said that the famed Lost Dutchman Mine is somewhere in the shadow of this imposing landmark. Many men have spent their lives (and some have been murdered) searching in vain for the gold that was first discovered here by the Spaniards and then again later by Jacob Waltz in the late 1800’s. To this day you can still see solitary men leading their pack mules quietly into the mountains searching for their payday; just don’t try and follow them.
