After about 100 different shots, I finally settled on this one. I liked the perspective from this side of the rock (and believe me I tried it from all sides). Also, I liked the sparkle from the minerals in the rock and how the density decreased from foreground to background.
I chose this subject because of the wide range of contours. Additionally, I liked the colors. Also, it's a pretty cool looking rock ;-). The shell imprints and fossilized pieces of shell and worm provide quite a bit of eye candy. Unfortunately, I am not a geologist, so I can't provide too much info about the rock itself. I can say it is a petrified chunk of sediment from the bottom of a lake. I have no idea on its age or place of origin. To be honest, I don't even remember for sure where I got it. Sorry.
Technical stuff on the photo:
Very little editing. Used The Gimp to crop off left and right edges. Otherwise, used the camera software, FinePixViewer v. 4.1.01E, to sharpen slightly to bring out the mineral "sparkles". Also, I increased the saturation just a touch and resized down to 640x480. Beyond that, this is pretty much as-is. (Used FinePixViewer because I'm still trying to figure out The Gimp.)

Unimaginative lighting makes this look flat and underscores the DOF.

| As a geology student I want to love this shot. Maybe if we saw the whole specimen it would have been better, or is it the angle? I'm not sure. Great idea none the less! Well done and good luck! |

| Interesting object with interesting texture. Nice warm colors. It might be more interesting to have similar objects in the background, thrown completely out of focus, to really illustrate the limited depth of field. |

| I think too much of this rock is in focus. And the subject itself is a bit bland. Maybe next time zoom in on the rock. |
