I agree!

Imagine the background with tree branches, leaves etc. The bird would not stand out as it does now. I used maximum DOF to totally blur the background, leaving only the background colors which contrast with the dominant red color in the bird. I feel that I used the negative space to the maximum extent and that it created the "wow" of the overall image.

Such a simple composition and I think the branch combining with the bird really makes a great shape and anchors the bird within the frame. I like the DOF which throws the background out of focus and leaves just an impression of the greenery behind without including potentially distracting detail. Technically this shot is absolutely wonderful - content wise it doesn't truly excite me, but I am admiring it as I look at it again.

Wonderful picture ! Be ready for critics about negative space :-)

Great photo of a house finch! Good details. What's the negative space? Usually I don't ask, but this one has me most perplexed. Grade for nice photo. 8 Swash

Excellent nature photo. One stop down would have given you the DOF for a sharp tail, too. Neg space here isolates the main subject. Good work. 8

House finch or purple finch?

I really like this picture, but it does not say "Negative Space" to me, though. 5 -lennier

Awww! What a beautiful finch! I haven't see this one before. Where is this one found? Absolutely beautiful portait. A definately keeper. BUT the "negative space" doesn't give me a WOW.

amazing use of DOF as negative space

Sorry but I don't think this meets the intent of the challenge

Awesome wildlife shot with added challenge compliance. This is wonderful - and highly skilled - use of DOF... Great work... (10)

Very nice shot though I don't think it utilizes the concept of negative space as it is too tightly cropped to get the impact that it might otherwise have.

Your neg space behind the bird is very nice. It stands out from the bird, and the bird stands out from it. I like how the bird and the branch kind of match in colors. The clarity and focus are excelent! The detail in the bird is simply superb. The angle and framing are also very nice. Great job and good luck in the challenge. 8 ~hbunch7187~

fabulous bird portrait........ fabulous colour....... fabulous framng.... fabulous photo technical ....... fabulous field ability........ and last, fabulous use of depth of field, which I assume is your intended negative space....... but that sadly does not meet all my criteria for negative space. an overall ten for the image.......... but five for the challenge.

Great colors on the bird. I like the blur in the background. Good detail. 6

Fabulous picture, but I see no negative space -- certainly no negative space that is a "wow!" Again, I love the capture but it doesn't met the challenge as I understood it.

I give you my highest possible non-compliant score. 4 Jak
