Hello from the Critique Club,
You captured the location and crop for your entry very well. However, there are two things that really keep this image from being a great DéjàVu image, the lack of tonal range and the shadow from shooting at a different time of day/year. Although there appears to be a complete tonal range in this image (there are blacks and whites), the main subjects almost appear as one shade of gray. And the shadow across the bridge is a distraction compared to the same area, which was the wow factor, in the original. Normally I try to provide some suggestions for better B&W conversion but CNovack provided the same advice I normally would.
Feel free to send me a PM if you have any questions regarding this critique.
Tim

I like the clarity, but I think I would have to lean towards the coloured version. |

I̢۪m not a big fan of tone mapping, but we are in a emulation challenge. Same shot, perfect framing, different time of day, and processing. 6.5 oh hell round up to a 7. |

I like the composition of this classic scene. Thought to my eyes it seems as if a slight white point adjustment would have improved the overall contrast. The slight toning is nice. 6 |

Wonderful emulation of the original! Love the angles seen here that really add punch to the composition. While a great emulation there is one major flaw in the composition. The tones and contrast are very flat. They need to pop more. If this is a B&W conversion from color simply pressing the greyscale button doesn't do the image justice (something I learned very quickly when participating in the B&W side challenge) . Color tones get lost with just just the desaturation greyscale conversion. One needs to play around with different settings to really get a good dynamic range of tones. This DPCer's tutorial is a good one on Methods of B&W Conversion. Your composition is great, lighting appears good, but you really need to increase the dynamic tonal variation in your B&W tones to really make this pop. |

Nicely composed, but very flat compared to the original. |

Sharp, well framed, but darker than it should be. Definitely darker than Simms'. |

A noble attempt at Mark's masterpiece. I actually like the shadows in your version, but his just has that wonderful metallic feel to it. I wonder how he does that? |

I think the lighting here really detracts from the shot. It's caused very harsh and distracting shadows on the bridge supports. As well I don't like the toning used on this shot. That said the technicals of the shot itsef are good, nice and sharp front to back and the composition is good |
