Challenge: Impressionism II (Advanced Editing V*)
Camera: Nikon D200
Lens: Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 EX APO IF HSM for Nikon
Location: Botanical Gardens, Melbourne
Date: Sep 6, 2007
Aperture: F4
ISO: 400
Shutter: 1/500
Galleries: Animals, Water
Date Uploaded: Sep 6, 2007

THE IMAGE: Shot in the Botanical Gardens early morning on the way to work. Took 300 great images, but felt this had the look I wanted. I don't know if I will get a heap of DNMC votes, but I really am not bothered about that. The water movement is all natural and yet it looks like a Photoshop filter was applied. I would have liked a better composition as I think it feels awkward. A little more of the bottom, a little more behind the bird...

THE EDITING: Levels, USM, colour balance, contrast adjustment...noise ninja, another adjustment layer for more depth, another run through noise ninja. I cloned out a few dust spots on the water...

PREDICTION: 6?
From Wikipedia:
Characteristics of Impressionist painting include visible brushstrokes(NO), open composition(I Guess), emphasis on light in its changing qualities (often accentuating the effects of the passage of time)(YES), ordinary subject matter (A PLAIN DUCK AND WATER), the inclusion of movement as a crucial element of human perception and experience (YES), and unusual visual angles (YES)... see how we go...

the water seems oily, which I take as a visual pun on oil painting. The water itself looks painterly. it looks pallette-knifed. you've nicely straddled the photographic and the painterly. and it's a plain great photo, regardless of challenge.

I love the brilliant colors and super sharp subject. I do wish the duck was swimming towards the camera, but what can you do? The subject does seem to be completely overpowerd by the crazy water though. 7

Nice.....Duck details too sharp for an impressionistic look?

Love the colors...I really hope you aren't getting dinged for the clarity of the duck, this is certainly a nice fit for the challenge.

I like yout title. I also like the water in the foreground. The duck itself seems a stark, (overly?) sharp contrast, but it a nice image overall.

I like your creative interpretation. It's also such a refreshingly crisp shot compared to the stricter impressionism approach.

Nice sharp shot of the duck. It does however ruin the impressionism for me.
