I'd planned on doing a coffee/milk photo session the weekend the speed challenge was announced. I didn't want to enter another coffee/milk splash so I tried to get a different look by using coffee and milk but using food colouring to give the coffee a more murky look and the milk a more chocolatey look. I hope the voters still like this type of shot....worrying...;-)

Post Challenge
Oh WOW, brilliant! This is such an honour. To get a high placing in a Free Study is like a dream come true to me. AND being in the top three with my friend SandyP… THANKS for the votes and the comments!
I’ve been a complete wreck this week watching the scores come in…

Oh wow, awesome! I spent 4 evenings trying to get something like this, but failed...how do you get this umbrella shape? I'm guessing that's some sort of a home-made / improvised tap, that drips the drops (lol!) at a rate such that when one drop hits the water and bounces, the second drop hits the bounced first drop? (err..if that makes sense)...

Needless to say I've been on a quest for about a month to reproduce something like this....

The food coloring, color, of choice is perfect. I like that it's not green, red or blue. The shape of this splash would really look great in glass as a coffee table design.

Hello,

I have been noticing that your "drop" photos have been taken at 1/500 sec. I know you use flash and according to specs, you can't go faster than 1/500 while using your flash.

Did you know that there is a way to use higher than 1/500 speed while using your flash? I think you may like to experiment with 1/1000 or 1/2000 speed to get even better "drop" shots!

Check out the shot below. It was done with my D70 and SB800 at 1/2000 sec.

PM me and I'll give you the simple info on how to work it out.

From your point of view you are, no doubt, right.
From my point of view it’s a different ball-game. This type of high speed photography has become a passion to me. It’s an extremely difficult type of image to get which probably accounts for some of the huge interest, especially with people who have tried this sort of thing. No two images are the same – they may look similar – but they’re not the same. For me, this is another fascinating aspect of the work I put into it. And I’m still learning. When I look at the first splash shots I did two years ago I find that I’m now getting better results. Definitely better focus, better DOF. I’m improving. This is also one of the reasons I show them here, any criticism, any comments are always a help.
One thing I’ve learned here is that no image is a surefire thing. No image automatically gets a good score. This is fine with me – I take what I get and learn from it.

Thanks for your thoughts Robert, I appreciate it.

Now this is a very good idea/suggestion Irene, and I think a great thing for you to consider doing a tutorial, on your magical droplets, as you do them so well.
You are definately the "Queen of the Droplets", thats for sure.

ETA: Sorry for the jackass comment a few months back. It really is a great shot, and you have proven me well wrong in even entertaining the thought that maybe this was the only shots you would perfect. Unbelievable and amazing work Irene!
