Photograph Information Photographer's Comments
Challenge: Negative Space (Classic Editing)
Camera: Fujifilm FinePix 2300
Location: Iowa State Fair Grounds, Des Moines
Date: Sep 9, 2002
Aperture: F4.7
ISO: auto
Shutter: auto
Date Uploaded: Sep 11, 2002

adjustments: Photoshop Autocontrast - The image may not have that much wow, but my attempt is to utilize the interaction of floor, dark figurative fragments and objects around the dog to represent the negative space to a viewer. At the time I took the photo I was also trying for some visual interaction with the dog leash, Degas was more successful. The photo was taken at an annual dog show in Des Moines.

I love this and it was a particularly inspired choice for the challenge it was in. In this case, "negative space" is the white floor, which is made into an exciting shape by the black rectangles cutting into it. Dangling in this negative space are feet (which in dreams often represent the phallus) and testicles. Here we have the battle between black and white, death and sex! It's epic, man!

Notice the dog is in a posture of sleep. Is this all his dream? Are we all his dream? Or is this our dream? The dog simply is, his ass presented to us in a gesture of submission to his fate... but do not be mistaken, this is courage not cowardice. The French Bull is our hero. He lies at the center of our perception. He is we as we are he and we are all together. Goo goo ga joob!

I like the balance of the various objects in the picture and I'm glad you didn't crop it to just show the dog and the skirt/sandal/foot.

Would have been better with only the bull and the lady.

could have been a great photo for neg space without the dog

This one is funny. You should have cropped the people in the tops feet off. Its kinda distracting. 6

Good lighting, unfortunate positioning of the dog. Negative space seems to not be related to the subject.

Interesting shape left in floor between all of the objects so neg space sort of interesting, unfortunately I am not grabbed by rest of photo or photo as a whole. Apologies.

I am definitely lost on this one... is the negative space the floor around the dog? - jmsetzler

Don't really like your crop, but the shot is good and it's creative thinking. We needed to see the dogs face I think. Her foot is distracting to me. Good luck, score 7 Justine
