I come from a family of classical musicians and grew up to become a performer and musician myself. Except, after classical training in piano and violin, I went the traditional music route.

I already mentioned Taiko, which I played for many years. (It's a martial art and I even got a big ol' trophy at a competition.)Later I went on to study, play and perform West African drums; in particular djundjun, which I'll take a photo of, too.

Aaaanyway... what you see HERE are penny whistles. For many, many years I was a musician with a morris dance group (Bedlam Bells Morris). (Jon will know what I'm talking about.)It's an English traditional dance form that is performed with bell pads on the shins.

We mainly performed at renaissance festivals in the Southwest, but also on the Arizona Commission on the Arts roster for schools and community events. You have to be a special kind of geek to love morris music - and I do.

Over time I acquired quite a few whistles, all of which in this photo are metal. Later I exclusively played a wooden whistle, though - not seen in this photo.

And the whistles, they are stuck in a 7-Day Mexican prayer candle glass. The whole thing lives on my desk.

I applied some soft glow filter to this to enhance the holiness of it all.

hahaha

Well once again I am given a reason why I love this challenge

Alicia, I love your new agedness (sometimes the phrase new agedness can be used as a disparaging term in the UK, but please believe me when i say in this case it is said with nothing but affection)

And then....And then.....I discover that you are a Morris Dancer!!!! OMG how my illusions are shattered ;-) I have to tell DPCers that dont know morris dancing that in england they are generally considered to be a bunch of very odd people who dress up in bizarre outfits and go round slapping themselves on the thighs and buttocks with either their hands or sticks with bells on.

The Morris Dancer can normally be identified by the fact that they are male with bushy beards (certainly I am not accusing Alicia of this), drink too much real ale and as a consequnce suffer from horrendous flatulence (in this instance having not meet Alicia I cannot make a judgement) and are the sort of people that you would feel very uneasy leaving small children around (definitely not true of Alicia)

I love the fact that you said 'You have to be a special kind of geek to love morris music - and I do.' because to say that means you are definitely not a geek (a non geeky morris dancer??? My world is being turned up side down) but a very cool person who knows what they like and embraces it (though it still does not me laughing at the idea of you doing the 'stripping the willow' dance or the 'green man' (scary character) dancer

Oh and as an aside....Cool whistle, I have not seen one like that before

I kept reading to find out how this whistle looked so much like a Mexican prayer candle, haha, I now see all the little whistles poking out of the top. Sounds like you are pretty talented, thanks for the story!

Thanks for the story. You are a woman of many talents!

I'd not have guessed from the photo that the subject was musical whistles. I thought it was about the colorful candle, which I find fascinating. What bizarre images.

I never knew a whistle could be played or that you could get one like this. Thanks for the writeup!

Before I read, I thought you had somehow snagged a whistle with a picture of the crucifixion on it!

what a great glimpse into your life! great idea to store your whistles there, and greater idea yet to shoot from that angle... it really ups the kitch-factor. nicely done!
