 The night of July 31, I went out just to practice for when the moon was going to rise over the U.S. Capitol a couple of nights later.

I already had my Free Study entry ready, so this was just going to be a night to play around.

Then the moon came up over the Jefferson Memorial, sending me scrambling up a hill to get into position; the moon moves pretty fast, so running was necessary.

I wrote up how to do this shot for a How'd They Do That? tutorial.

Post-challenge: hooray! This image and the Triumph challenge that also ended tonight cap the first time I've ever scored over 6 three times in a row. :)

Jeffrey, congrats on this fine image. I can see how folks would think this was photoshopped. excellent example of how knowledge about your equipment can affect the look of the photo.

Thanks for a really detailed explanation of what you did. The shot makes it look like the moon is right there, sharing the same air space. Very cool photo.

I'm gonna have to play around with this some. Though I don't have anywhere close to the amount of zoom I would need to pull it off as well. I still wonder why you didn't pre-submit the validation rather than waiting for it to happen when you posted the picture. I'm betting that would have helped the score a good bit. I've noticed that people vote down a suspected fake even if they submit it for validation.

Quite a feat!!! Thank you for sharing your technique, I learned a lot. I just can't believe the size of the moon relative to the memorial. I've never seen anything like this.

You gotta PM me with how you are able to get that moon in focus with detail. All I ever get is chunks of light that turn out to look like nothing. I want the detail that you have here. 7

I wonder if this is Levy's picture, ha ha, I can see why people wondered. My Guess this could be a long time Exposure shot you could have shot one, switched to a different zoom setting and uncovered the lens. Just like the shot of the Jefferson and two Washington Memorials that was talked about in a tutorial.

Heck if atmospherics are just right you can get this effect close to the horizon. without any camera games!

Congrats on the validation and the fav! :D It's a very cool shot. Did you use a split-field filter or a very long lens? I remember you asking about how to accomplish this in a thread not so long ago and can't remember all of the details. Good luck! :)

Very nice! the moon looks so big. reminds me of Bruce Almighty! did you pull the moon down to make it look good in your photograph? great detail in the moon as well. 8
