Just looking at this photo makes me all creeped out. I had a bat in my bedroom in college once and it scarred me for life! I am soooo terrified of the little buggers. It's ridiculous and logic says not to be but I simply can not stand them. The thing I remember most is the horrible noise the wings make when they fly. UGGGGGHHHH! You are much braver than I. |

Hey Jojo don't know if this has been sujested to yu but get a contractor and have them install one of these Chimney Cap it will do the job right and keep out other pests as well. As a contractor myself if I lived closer to you I would come over and do it for you but alas I am miles and miles from you. Good luck with this.
MAX! |

Can you put up some bat houses / roosts in trees near your chimney to encourage them to go there instead of into your home ?
That, combined with some fine-mesh wire over the chimney sound like a good plan to me who knows nothing about bats. |

just some sort of screen over the chimney hole seems like it would work, just has to be able to let the smoke out in the winter, mabe a chicken type wire,i know that the are sometimes very small so would have to consider the screening carefully, can we call you batty now?,lol! |

At least this one came in handy for one photograph. Looks like he's enjoying his nap. Good luck getting rid of them! |

Hope you've solved your problem by now. I don't think I'd be able to sleep if it were me. Thankfully I've never even seen a bat.
Nice photo. The compostition is great. |

Holy moly Jojo, did you actually say you rolled back over & went to sleep? Geez, I could NOT do that! I can't believe you had that many swooping around, I would freak out! I think an exterminator would be key here. You are one brave woman, I couldn't even sleep if I knew a teeny-tiny spider was somewhere in my room...much less 5 or 6 bats....eeck! |

'getting out of hand'?! This got out of hand along time ago. I would never be able to sleep if I knew there was just one bat anywhere in my house. I say trap them. Probably easier and cheaper than an exterminator plus it's nicer. Then get someone else to cover the roof. |

A bat! How cool!! Well after reading your story I guess it's really not that cool, I'd hate to have bats flying around my room! I'm not sure on any ways to get rid of them, try google-ing it maybe...?
This is a really great shot though, looks like he's playing hide-n-seek with you or something with the way his wings are. Nice shot despite the circumstances! ;) |

Oh, my gosh, brilliant shot, and what a situation to be in! I love your casual attitude about them.
Maybe rather than calling an exterminator you could call someone who, for the same price, might be able to cover your chimney in a way that will keep the bats out? Poor guys, they think they've found a really great place to hang out (no pun intended). :)

Hmm, no ideas on this one. There is something, though, that is drawing them to the chimney. Have you added any kind of new media like equipment? Sometimes the waves that they give off might draw the bats like a moth to light. You did a nice capture here. When the bat problem is under control you will look at this picture and think what a great image it really is. |

Great capture of your "friend". We had one in here a couple months ago and it took a couple hours to get it out. We tried gentle things and I literally ended up batting it out the open door with a broom - I was that desperate at that point. How did you get 15 out?
BTW, thanks for the car pics - cool looking car.

Whoa! Creepy. I know bats are harmless and good for the ecosystem, but I wouldn't like them in my home. I admire you for not just freaking and killing them. Is there a local animal control center you could call?
I thought from the thumbnail it was a photo of a bug cocoon.

OH my lord.....I would have gone balistic if I had found bats in the bedroom at 5am
I cant give you any real advice re extermination...Bat are endangered in the UK and if you get any in your house then you are stuck with them
Its a wonderful picture though (providing that you dont have to live with them) |

Good shot, but eeeeew. I'm glad it's not my bedroom. See if you can keep the little guys in the neighborhood, but out of the house. They catch all sorts of insects. |

hey jojo .. buggar about the bats ... and i wouldnt want to be sleeping underneath!!! ... waking up in guano would be really really unpleasant .. shame about having to exterminate them, but it might be your only option like everyone else is saying .. i have no idea wot you could do .. i dont suppose having a cat would scare them off !! .. :) |

first off great picture! second, bat abatement is challenging but not impossible. you want to do it when they are out for the night... make it impossible for them to get back in. so plan to do it in the dark. otherwise you are just trapping them in the attic, and you will have another smellier problem later. at dusk go outside your house (have a couple friends posted all the way around) and see where they are coming out...it might be more than one place. good luck! and remember bats are good... they eat the mosquitoes! |

Does your chimney have a damper? If so you can close that. If not you need to cover the entrance. I believe Home Depot and/or Lowes carries chimney covers made of heavy mesh that lets the smoke out while keeping the critters out. How are you going to get them out of your house? Be careful especially if any of them look sick, listless of lethargic which could be a sign of rabies. Many cities have a animal rescue. Check with your local animal shelter to see if they know.
Great photo and a very interesting story.

yeah i second what karmat is saying - and bat guano is not good for the family either. Use your womanly wiles to get some neighbor up on the roof for ya. You are probably gonna have to call someone to get aThere has to be someone willing to help! The exterminator is only gonna help the short term solution.
I found this link if you were looking for some other short term fixes.
Scroll down for "Bat Repellants"
Good luck and I hope something works out for you soon!
I forgot to add that this is a really good photo btw. yuck yuck yuck you can see it's face!

Okay, besides being a bit freaky, I don't know that bats are not the most hygenic of animals. There was a house around here with an infestation in the attic one time that was "condemned" until they got cleaned out. Of course, I also seem to remember that it was literally 1000s of them in the attic, so that is a bit different from your situation.
I'm thinking you should probably call an exterminator.:/
\Great shot though. had this been me, I would have had a heart attack then went after them with a tennis racket or something. Probably not the solution you are looking for. :) Good luck. |
