I've been intrigued by the shape of star anise seed pods for quite awhile, but as so often the case, some ideas are better than other ideas, and nothing really went the way I wanted on this one. I was using my macro lens, and I think I got carried away -- I'd have done better to take this from more of a distance and give myself more room to crop. The seed pod is just sitting there, pretty much in the middle of the frame with nowhere else to put it.

The background is tissue paper crumpled. I like it because it's cheap, and you can get a lot of texture with very little effort.

Excellent detail and texture. This works wonderfully in B&W as well!

I really like the composition. Great textures throughout the pic.

Nice minimalistic shot. Maybe a bit more contrast would help it to have some more *oomph* (of course, take this with a bit of salt; i'm viewing on a notoriously flat monitor)

Interesting subject -- I thought for sure this was a strawberry top from the thumbnail image.

I'm glad you mentioned the tissue paper. I'd never think of that and am always interested in how things are done. I'm (embarrassed to say) not sure what anise seed pods are, but I really like the image and composition. The processing reminds me of a post card, and this almost looks like it's on a white sandy beach somewhere.

Great idea. You might get a better result by using nearly parallel sidelighting to give more form, shape and texture to the star anise seed.

the tissue is very cool as it makes it almost appear that the pod is the inside of a much bigger flower. The soft tones are good although perhaps because the paper is so white it takes a little away from the pod itself

At first glance I thought it was a starfish on sand. Nice texture in the background and I may have to try tissue paper myself.

Nice lighting on the paper and I like the BW treatment. This is an appealing photo - something that could go on the kitchen wall.

The tissue paper is a great idea, it makes a fantastic background! This is very attractive -- I take it the seed is pretty tiny?

I like the texture of the paper, I almost thought it was sand with a starfish on it, and the B&W works really well!
