Challenge: Negative Space III (Basic Editing)
Camera: Canon EOS-350D Rebel XT
Location: My house

Aperture: 4.0

Shutter: 1/25

Used thin thread to hang the coin behind my black couch. Then a board which I positioned to block most of the light on the string. Using the side light from a near by window I took the picture of my own thumb under the suspended coin.

I then used a slight levels adjustment and a very small blur to hide the remaining string. Border added and save for web.

Greetings from the Critique Club

The negative space works well here. The photo certainly meets the challenge. And nice job hiding the thread; not an easy task with basic editing. Composition is nice and simple, though I think it would work better if the coin was higher; it kind of crowds the hand as is.

The low key approach doesn't really work for me here. Dark low key lighting is useful for conveying dramatic, gloomy, or romantic moods, but it just doesn't fit the subject here.

Finally, the subject here just isn't terribly exciting. While it's certainly possible to make a compelling photo of flipping a coin using the right lighting, position, etc., the mundane subject makes achieving this a bit harder.

I wish there was more light on the coin.

would have liked to have seen the coin more clearly but I guess it's not easy to do in Basic Editing

A little more lighting would've helped this. Focus could have been clearer.

Good idea for the challenge, but the coin needs more light, the hand is a bit soft. Looks like a hard a hard shot to capture correctly

The negative space is good, but the picture is a bit dark. The top of the hand and the coin need more light. Good stop action.

A little more light reflecting from the coin would have helped it stand out in contrast to the negative space around it.

I think it's my monitor, but the coin doesn't really stand out, as if it would need a bit more light...But like I said, I think it's my monitor.

Not enough light on the quarter. Give you credit for trying to capture a difficult shot.

Nice idea. The lightning could be improved.

IMO, this would work better if there were more detail.

The quarter is lost in shadow. So much space on the top is unneccessary to convey negative space.

Different take on this. I would have like to see a few more details in the qtr.
