Good capture and composition, and while I know that these aren't "posed," it doesn't really feel like a candid, either.

I struggle a bit with the idea of animals as candids though I do have to say that this is a wonderful image and one that I would be happy and proud to have in my portfolio

Animals just aren't candid, to me. They are unaware of photography and they don't modify their behavior when they think they're being watched, especially from a distance.
