 Georgi is indeed light-painted with a flashlight, then her and the canvas jump out of the way, and I jump in to do some fire painting.

To add a bit of an explanation -
I agree with a lot of people's suggestions for this, and some of them had been tried out, but were too difficult to pull off in the 15sec time limit my camera has.

At first we started off with an elaborate setup where first the pallete is light-painted, then Georgi jumps out of the way, we hold up a big piece of cardboard in front of where the canvas used to be, and I fire-paint a shape through the holes in the cardboard. However, it took a lot of jumping around in the dark to get everything in position in time, and it was really hard to get the shape to a position where the canvas used to be. So we kinda gave up on that.

Lighting up the pallete proved to be quite difficult - the flames were always slightly above, or behind, or whatever. It worked in a couple of shots where we had a tiny candle on top of it. It was hard not to get blown out highlights from it. It would've improved the picture, but I just found no way of pulling it off at the time.

Most of the 'paintings' we did weren't actually limited to the canvas at all - I figured that for someone painting with light, that's not really a necessary limitation. That seemed to be a lot of people's objection, and yeah, I guess I can see it, but disagree.

This took a total of 5 hours of shooting. I guess for the next one I'll do 7 or 8, and see if it does any better :)

I agree that it's a good pic, and with more takes you might've gotten a great pic, but you gotta stop some time. :) I'm just amazed you got the "paint" to touch the real paintbrush!

I know you like fire, but a flashlight is a lot easier to control!

Jelena, you got a 9 from me during challenge. I thought it was a very good interpretation of the challenge ... and I also thought it was a hard challenge to do well. Great job and congrats.

what I would try is using a canvas that already has some abstract painting on it, and combine the firestrokes with the brushstrokes. just for the heck of it.

I gave this an 8 during the challenge, and thought I had commented; I really liked it (as is); I agree that Rob's suggestions are interesting, and agree it's a really neat idea. Well executed, too. Congrats on a new top pic!

Congrats on a top 5 for you. This is a neat idea, though if the light-art covered more of the canvas it might have pushed the score over 6. A bit of glowing on the plate would have been a nice touch too.

i like the idea but I find the white balance off - too much yellow - and the painter seems to have missed the canvas! 5

Now thats intersting, how did he/she paint off canvas? Good idea though... also i notice some "Jpeg artifacts" on most of the image... did you compress this too much maybe?

This is so close to being an excellent photo.....right now I would call it good. The "painting" is going over the edges of the easel, it should be contained on the canvas I think. The painter looks a bit out of focus, looks like she was moving a bit during the long exposure. But a very creative idea and I think with a few more tries you'd get it perfect.

I really like the concept. I wish all the 'paint' was on the canvas and that the painter was in sharp focus. Would have gotten a higher score, IMO!
