Challenge: Selective Desaturation II (Advanced Editing V)
Camera: Canon EOS-350D Rebel XT
Lens: Tamron SP AF 17-50mm f/2.8 Di II LD Aspherical (IF) for Canon
Location: my bathtub
Date: May 19, 2007
Aperture: f/4
ISO: 100
Shutter: 1/160s
Galleries: Water, Children
Date Uploaded: May 20, 2007

This is a retake of one of my favorites from January (never submitted to DPC). A single flash bounced off the bathroom ceiling.

A bunch of editing (I really was teaching myself how to use adjustment layers and do selection correctly):
Converted from RAW.
Channel desat (four layers, 1 each for duck and face, a second to allow varying opacity on each)
Curves layer (give it a little more punch
A bit of cloning on her face (a few scratches)
Cloning on the duck (he was beat up)
Color balance (too red-brown)
Resize, sharpen, etc.

I predict about 6.0, maybe a little higher because my model is cute (and no, she isn't available to model for other people).

This is beautiful and disturbing and happy and creepy all at once. Fascinating. 9

Well, it's kinda wierd. In an interesting sort of way. A baby with gray hair is somewhat disturbing, but on the other hand, she's so likeable I can forgive the hair anomaly.

Nice picture. The gradually desaturated skin looks a bit weird though. Still, I understand why is like that.

in full color this would be an amazing and well composed shot.. however this doesnt work with desat for me, the desat makes the child look old, with grey hair.. beautiful full eyes on the child.. def a beauty :)

This is, no offense, kinda creepy. The gray hair/body kind of gives her a 'Night of the Living Dead' vibe - not something I'd particularly want in a photo of a child. The composition is good, and the lighting, and her expression... I'm just not sure this was a good choice for a photo for this challenge.

nice composition and clarity ... I think that the 'under water' desat parts are kinda creepy though ... like death taking over ... sorry to be morbid, just letting you know how this makes me react ...

Cute kid, great setup, but I'm not sure the selective desaturation really made a huge impact.

Cute girl.

Great image. Not sure if I like the selective desaturation or not. It certainly highlights her face, but also creates a bit of a weird effect with her hair. I think it would have looked better in full colour.
