This is my grandfather at 79. Indoor at dinner table, poor lighting.

Nice shot! I feel like I'm sitting in the kitchen with him. I actually like the sparse background.

I like how he looks, but your crop puts emphasis on the background, and the background is terrible.

My first reaction was that I know him; not him personally, but people like him, and have all my life. He reminds me, by the look in his eye, of a guy I used to live near, with a certain, "don't give me any trouble, kid, I've had enough of that in my life already" look to it. He was kind, but "forthcoming" (as his daughter used to say). As for the image itself, I agree it looks a bit sterile. The angle is good, it allows for a certain respect built in as you look up toward him a little bit, but the background makes it harsher than I suppose was intended. Good suggestions from Richard ( yanko), so I won't repeat those, but he looks like a good subject for different settings if he'd go along with it.

The background makes this feel more like an impersonal headshot rather than an intimate candid/portrait. Perhaps a wider angle, despite the clutter it might bring, would be the way to go. However, I talk for myself since I do not know the guy and seeing more of his environment would help. As a keepsake this is more than sufficient.

Edited for clarity.

Nice detail. The only thing I find distracting is the scratch on his glass lens.
