Annual Prom dress game at Brown University. Normally we play Harvard, but they couldn't make it this year, so it's just a Brown vs. Brown scrimmage.
Levels, hue/sat, crop, hue/sat, brightness/contrast, sharpen, resize, save for web
Problems I have with this shot: I wish you could see the face of the girl who's tackling the girl in the foreground, I wish the ball weren't blocking someone's head, and I wish the ref weren't in the background. I also find the bright pink on the dress of the girl in the center annoying, and have decreased the saturation some, but found it no less distracting when I went even more desaturated. I played around with a different crop and with lower overall saturation, but in the end decided the brighter colors were more eye-catching. I hope people find the dresses amusing.
Suggestions and crit on post-processing choices would be particularly appreciated here. |

this is quite an interesting catch, like the placement of the ball. i'd say more contrast to really make it pop. or you could desaturate all colours but yellow to make the ball stand alone.

Greetings from the critique club. First off nice take on the challenge. Its definately sports, although definately a different take on it. I like the stopped action on the ball and the players. Def very close to peak action. The play coming at you is def nice. My biggest fault of this photo seems to be thats its too busy. There are too many things in the photo to take my attention. I think I might have preferred a very tight crop to lose the stuff on the left that doesnt offer much to the photo. I might also liked to have seen just a touch more USM after resizing to sharpen it up a touch. Overall nice challenge entry. |

Ok, so for the record, yes, the person in the blue dress on the left is male... he's the ref (what a good sport to wear a dress too, huh?). And yes, they wear ridiculous makeup on purpose.
Those of you wondering why:
The point is to raise awareness about the sexualization and stigmatization that women in sports (especially contact sports) experience. Rugby is still seen largely as a man's sport, so playing Rugby in prom dresses is meant to be an ironic juxtaposition of feminine prom dresses with a sport generally seen as very masculine. A lot of women's rugby clubs across the US (and maybe in other contries too?) have prom dress games every year. Many of them raise money to benefit women's charities. Aside from all that, it's just a lot of fun for both spectators and players. This is without fail our best attended game every year. |

IS that a guy in drag on the far left in the leopard print? If it is, I'd like my dress back. |

This is a bit like that high key BW photo with the hot babes in bikinis, all dirty and playing rugby... Can't remember the photographer, but it's pretty famous, so I guess someone else here knows. I'm sure I didn't just dream it ;) |

I think I had a nightmare like this once after eating too much cheese late at night :- )
Love the positioning of the ball and her focus on it while being tackled. |
