I like the B&W treatment, but would go lower on the perspective and catch more of the child's face, also looks tilted and with ugly flash use. Given that the focus is on the act of reading, the composition needs to be better centered on the key elements of reading, i.e. the childs head and book needs to be in a more key location instead of just barely trying to fit the whole child in the frame

shooting from the childs eye level may have made this a stronger image

Cute. But, she seems a bit cramped inside this very tightly cropped shot. If there was a possibility of a reshoot, I'd suggest getting down on the floor, closer to her level, and looking more upwards into her face, instead of down at the top of her head, and leaving more blank space above her head. If you had to, you could lookse the boots, as well, as they detract from the face. Also, I find this a bit too contrast-y, and there are some blown highlights on her face, near the nose. 5
