My favorite lighthouse. I think I need a graduated ND filter for my skies.

I think the sky needs to be processed separately from the rest of the image. For me, the sky is blown out, but the rest is still kinda flat.

I want to get some kind of filter too. I like the composition on this one. The contrast and details in the stone is great!

I saw the difference between this and the edited version. I actually prefer this version as it seems more "real" especially in the clouds. Wonderful shot. Good lines and overall composition.

Great shot, well balanced and looks crisp and dramatic. Sky could be with a little more impact but again, thats a minor quibble.

Love the perspective in this composition - the rockwall stairway beacons forth the viewer to climb up to take a closer look at the lighthouse. The sky near the top of the lighthouse has blown out contrasts - use of the burn tool can tone that down. Some of the contrast in tones are a little flat throughout - some have suggested some dodgeing and burning which is a good suggestion another might be to play around with the Channel Mixer as well to adjust some levels.

Nice! I sometimes get good skies out of my polarizer, when it makes the blue so dark.

Wonderful perspective and great composition. Would like perhaps to see a bit of burning / dodging in foreground, especially to bring out the stairs more. Very well done indeed!

I think the subject and composition are really fantastic, beautiful scene. The sky is definitely too light though, and personally I'd like to see the whole shot a little darker. Maybe a polarizer?

Gee this is so dam good, re a black and white conversion, as it really does stand out so much.
I love the composition, and also the light, that youu have captured.

Wonderful conversion. Looks way better than the color.

The lighthouse is fantastic - very good perspective. The sky was probably too light, yes? I don't know how to remedy that and run into the same problem myself. Maybe someone else has a wise idea...

The steps carved into the rock really jump out at me. Nice one.

Beautiful lighthouse! I like the perspective and the rocks really add so much to this.

This is a gorgeous image. I rather like the sky that way. I think for some reason (in my opinion anyways...) it adds to the feeling that this is in the middle of nowhere. Great job!

Very nice image...and don't worry, I have plenty of sky shots that look way worse than that! I need an ND also :)

I love lighthouses and this is such a cool looking one! I like the perspective in this. The sky might be a bit bright.

You're right Jeff, a ND graduated filter will work miracles for you when dealing with bright skies. This is a great looking lighthouse and would be fun to photograph.

I don't know if your monitor is calibrated but on my one this lacks a little contrast (shot needs to be a little darker)
the water, rocks and lower half of the lighthouse all seem to blend together tonally
by lightening the shadows and darkening the highlights you have lowered the overall contrast to much
any chance of seeing the color original as I like the shot and would like to try a few different B&W looks, jpeg this size would be fine :)

yep, that's the only thing that lets this otherwise great image down, the blown out sky.
maybe try some dodging and burning?

I like the perspective - good job bringing the rocks in the foreground into the image.

I need a ND filter as well. One option you might consider is to perform tonemapping on this image. You took this in RAW and it should have enough information to try with Photomatix Pro, etc. It's not perfect in most cases, but may help avoid the blown out sky a little. Underexposing the image a little and using Phmx Pro has worked pretty well on some of my b/w conversions with bright sky.

Wow - those rocks look fake - SMILE!

Love the cut outs on the rock face, nice viewpoint.
