Day 1 of the May 2007 30-day B&W challenge. B&W seems to be a particular challenge for me, so this is going to be one heck of a learning experience.

Very nice shot - I like how you framed this, and resisted the urge to show the ends of all the needles.

Nice angle and dof. I like how the needles appear to spin out from the center.

This would have worked really well in symmetry in my opinion. Good use of depth of field and good use of the frame. Good stuff.

Hey Jeannie~ This looks great~ I love the little spiral in the center of the photo. The DOF is nice too, I think you nailed it! How's it going, being on the mend? Thank goodness for the camera-eh?

Can't say I'd change anything on this image - you've done the black and white quite well here!

I really enjoy this image. The needles appear to me like metal barbs twisting around. I really like the shallow dof, and focus seems to be right where it needs to be. Overall I would say this is very well done.

A very nice and interesting viewpoint to share. The contrast and tones look great on my CRT.

Hi Genie - didn't realize you were also participing in this! Glad to see you back in action :-) This is a very well done image IMO. The tonals are rich and deep, and the center of the pine branch is very sharp.

You want honesty.....

Well I can honestly say that I like this.

There certainly could be arguments made that it should have more tone/contrast, but I like it the way it is

Nice bokeh

Love your choice of subject, certainly think you did it justice.

This has an interesting abstract feel to it - the needles seem like shiny and metallic pins around a cushion.

I think you've done an excellent job! DOF is really excellent.

About the only thing that I think I might have suggested is perhaps, darkening this shot just a tad to really bring out the depths of b&w a bit more. But, it's really a great shot!

Jeanie, first, "HIIIIIIII!!!!!!" I'm so happy you are better and back into the swing of things! I'm so happy to be doing another 30-day thing with you!

And 2nd, you sure have a great showing here for confessing that you have a lot to learn! This is great! I love the effect of that the shallow depth of field gives this. It's such an appealing abstract.

Fantastic job!

Very good DOF, it just pops out at you. I wonder if this would look good as a square crop? I rarely do square crops but I think it would suit this image.

Hmmm... I'm not seeing any problems with your B&W. :) This is a great shot. The DOF is perfect. Great composition.

Nice shot, great textures and DOF. Could you put your camera settings on the photo's though. I'm playing around more with manual settings for DOF variations. I'd like to see what this was taken at. Shots like this I find are fun to take at the full range of f-stops to see the changes.

He, he, I don't think there's a problem with the b/w in this image, it looks fine to me (maybe just a bit more punch would help, just maybe though). I think the main problem many of us have is finding subjects that work well in b/w. In this case, I think that colour would sort of make the image, and making it in b/w instead sort of takes away from the impact. Does that make sense?

I like this a lot. A lot a lot. You might play with curves to change where the greys hit; but then you might also decide you like it this way after all.

Woah, this is so much cooler in large than in the thumbnail. I love how this pine thing is coming out at me. Wouldn't know what to tell you how to improve it - it's great as is.

Great DOF and detail. I like that it's not centered too. Nice way to start off.
