This is my attempt to take a perfect dpc photograph ... only joking.
This is SO going to get mangled in the voting. So why submit it?
Because I think it's a good photograph, is why. It's another shot prompted by one of the greats - in this case the marsh-land shots of Emerson and Goodall (working together), especially, in it's post-processing, 'Rowing Home the Schoof-Stuff', taken in 1886. I've had nearly three weeks of being buried in the dark in a theatre, and I really needed to get out into the country: it just happened to be a foggy damp day - perfect for some moody riverside photography, I thought.
Another point here is that this is almost the place from which John Constable painted one of his great paintings - Flatford Mill - though he was actually looking in the other direction.
I'm not comparing myself with those people, but what better place and what better atmosphere to try to achieve?
Technically - it's shot seriously under-exposed: fog is a nightmare for producing burnt-out whites, and they're irrecoverable. Neatimage, colour corrected, and cropped. Lightened about 45 points. Levels to bring the blacks back. Those last two are important: if you just sort out the black/white points with one pass of levels or curves, the sky area becomes very grainy - this approach prevents that. Re-sized. No advantage taken of relaxing of rules, this is a 'dpc legal' photograph.

A stunning photograph! I look at these votes and shake my head. Makes me wonder about this site, or I should say many of the sites members. |

The foggy effect is moody and mysterious. IMHO it needs some sharp object in the foreground to contrast with all that softness. |

I really like the mood you have created with this shot. There are a couple of minor things you might consider for improvements:
My eye bounces from the looking down the river to the brighter gray in the top left corner. If allowed, you might want to burn top left so focus is more concentrated in the frame.
Maybe move to your right so you can frame with more to see between the trees and less of the bright gray on the left. I realize this may involve wading or swimming... remember to keep the camera high over your head. |

Stunning. Would have worked well for Soft Focus as well. I really like the low tone lighting here. |
