A mortar and pestle that my great grandmother used in "the old country." And maybe her mother before her. I display it in my kitchen, and actually do use it. It is one of my favorite possessions. I am fascinated by the marks of many years of use, imbuing it with its character of the ages.

Taken on my patio, for the light.

I'm one of your 7s, I love the solidity of that mortar and pestle.

oh wow, I had no idea it was a mortar and pestle. What a great item to still have around. Looks like it is still in good condition. Since it is old, I wonder how the whole pic would have looked in sepia tone. Very interesting!

Great take on kitchenware, I don't know how recognizable it is as a mortar and pestle though to the general public, and that might have hurt your score. But a really interesting piece, and shot well in natural light!

It's a lovely piece! What a treat to still have it in your possession. I do agree with Julianne that the background doesn't contribute well - but I do like the light and understand why you shot it outside.

Very nice item. The crop feels a little tight, and I don't think the brick background does much to enhance it.

What is it?

Nice shot. Seems kind of odd sitting on brick outdoors. I guess the backdrop doesn't make much sense to me, but its probably something that I'm just not getting.

nice composition and good tonal range, especially in the mouth of the thing. however i wish you hadn't taken the shot against the bricks -- i think they make the gold tone and the antiqueness of the piece lose some of its impact. actually, if you'd been able to find a cobblestone road that would have been perfect :)

you didn't get that at Walmart!
