This simple brass spring is the back end of a common home hygrometer.

Hygrometers are used to measure humidity - the water vapor content of the atmoshpere.

The change in tension on the spring rotates a shaft that moves the indicator arm located on the front side of the device to show changes in atmoshperic humidity.

Dang those hygometer scratches. They always ruin my shots as well, but you still scored 3 10s. The real question is: why do you have a hygrometer in the middle of the Arizona?

Everything is fine with about 3/4 of the subject image....don't know what you experience with the bottom 1/4...maybe a lighting problem? not sure. the BG reads a bit grey here and you might have tried to use your own white balance for this. Like the gradation of the shadow.

Scratches and glare on the bottom right of hygrometer are distracting. A little overexposed?

Had to look it up to find out what it is ;-)

Technical: Most all images submitted fit the challenge. Exposure composition focus lighting all good.

Personal: My lack of knowledge of how a hygrometer works, and having never seen one before for comparison, means I have absolutely no emotional attachment to this image- it doesn't compel me.

My vote: 6

Overall interest : 1/3
Technical : 2/3 (slight light overburn on the top, composition too centered )
Challenge fit : 1/2 (simple object indeed, but don't feel "simplicity" concept)
Wow factor : 1/2 (don't know exactly why? probably cos i like macro shots.)
