Challenge: Kitchenware (Advanced Editing V)
Camera: Fujifilm FinePix F30
Location: My kitchen (the oven)
Date: Apr 21, 2007
Aperture: 3.2
ISO: 200
Shutter: 1/4
Galleries: Humorous, Self Portrait
Date Uploaded: Apr 21, 2007

Surprisingly awkward to shoot. I had a light bounced off a reflector lighting up my face, a torch at the back of the oven lighting up the glove and fork, and the camera was perched on top of a DVD box at the back of the railing.

Editing: levels, selective colour, channel mixer, hue/sat, usm, neat image. Something like that. The bulk of the editing was done to get my skin colour to something resembling normal.

I don't expect this to do that well, but hey, I shot it, so I might as well enter... Might make people laugh anyway.

Predicted comments:
-focus too soft
-oversharpened
-fork not visible enough
Well, what can you do...

**Post-challenge:
Ooh, lots of comments, thanks!
The WB is indeed off, because I had several different types of light mixing, and apparently that's bad (or makes you unable to adjust the WB properly anyway)

I like the clutter. Deal with it :)

Oh, and here's a later edit:

Hahaha! I gave this one an 8. I loved it...so original and refreshing after seeing so many whisks and bottle openers!

CRITIQUE CLUB COMMENT

The idea is fairly clever and the title of this photo is what really sells it. Unfortunately, without the title the photo doesn't scream "kitchenware" as it should. In fact, the real focus of the photo is your face and your expression. As a viewer I spent too long trying to decide what your expression is conveying...joy...surprise...indifference? In any case, the longer I spend looking at your face the less time I spend seeing kitchenware. While your facial expression is intriguing, the subject of the challenge was kitchenware and a little more focus on the kitchenware would have helped. I have to agree with the comments you've already been receiving. The focus is a bit soft and the white balance is painfully shifted too yellow. While I see from your own write up that you liked the clutter and we should deal with it, I still feel compelled to comment that the best photos are kept somewhat simple. The clutter just adds more items to draw the eye away from the subject. As a critigue I'm trying to tell you ways you could increase your score (and thereby present a better picture). Less clutter would have helped your score. I think you came close here to having a much better score. A better white balance, sharper focus, and less clutter would probably translate into a score closer to 6 rather than 5. Keep looking for creative ways to shoot photos. I congratulate you on coming up with a fairly unique perspective and working at it to set it up. Good job!

While I really liked the content of the shot, I thought the focus was a bit off (seems to be on the counter). Though I thought it was a little of a stretch for the challenge (unless I just don't get it, besides the whole chicken thing). Still I thought the idea was ingenious and it was a well thought out and well framed photo. In a FreeStudy, you would have gotten around an 8, however I only gave you a 5 in the challenge do to connection to the challenge topic. Great job though!

For some reason, I keep thinking of the old "I feel like chicken tonight" commercials, with the dancing chicken in the oven. Bizarre stuff. Detail is sharp throughout the picture, giving a nice context to the "peeking in" shot, and the fork make a nice framing element. The only distraction is in the upper right, which might be a temperature gauge.

Great idea well executed, for me the only slightly negative comment would be the clutted on the top right work surface
